How to Improve Your AI Search Visibility: A Step-by-Step Workflow Using Free Tools
To improve your AI search visibility, first make sure AI crawlers can read your site, then fix the structured data and content depth that make a page easy to cite, then check which buyer questions already mention you. We tested this workflow on our own website, ranksenseai.com, and the results were not flattering: our AI visibility audit scored 62 (D), our AEO analysis scored 48 (F), and our SaaS visibility score was 74 (C). Below is the process, what each score told us, and where the tools have limits.
- Allow crawling: let the AI crawlers you want read your robots.txt, sitemap and pages.
- Add structured data: Organization, Article, Product or SoftwareApplication schema where relevant.
- Write answer-first: put a direct answer under each question-style heading.
- Build topical authority: cover a narrow topic deeply, with original data and named expert authors.
- Earn outside mentions: reviews, directories, communities and credible publications.
- Test prompts: ask buyer questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google regularly.
- Measure: track citations, mentions, share of voice and AI referral traffic.
What is AI search visibility?
It matters because fewer searches end in a click. SparkToro's 2026 analysis of Similarweb data found about 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, and Ahrefs found AI Overviews were associated with about 34.5% lower click-through for the top result on informational queries. Adobe's 2026 guide, citing Bain, reports that roughly 80% of consumers rely on AI summaries for at least 40% of their searches, and that organic traffic falls 15% to 25% as a result. Treat these as dataset-specific findings, not universal rules. Platforms also differ in how they choose sources, so no single tactic works everywhere.
What we did: five tools, one real site
Irfan Dar, our SEO lead, ran each free tool against ranksenseai.com in October 2026. Here is the scoreboard, followed by what each result means.
| Tool | What it checks | Our result |
|---|---|---|
| AI Visibility Audit | AI-crawler access, structured data, technical basics, trust signals, SaaS content depth | 62 (D) |
| AEO Analysis | Answer readiness across signals such as entity authority, passage quality, stats and corroboration | 48 (F) |
| SaaS Visibility Checker | Coverage across 20+ SaaS directories and missing listings | 74 (C) |
| AI Citation Checker | 14 generated buyer queries; whether Gemini cites the brand and which sources it uses | Queries generated; see Step 4 |
| Content Brief Generator | Builds a brief from a topic and audience | Output, not a score |
All of these are free for now. The score appears instantly; the audit and AEO tools ask for an email address to unlock the detailed breakdown.
Step 1: Check whether AI crawlers can read your site
This is the foundation. If crawlers are blocked, nothing else matters. Our audit gave AI crawler access 23 out of 25 and technical foundation 15 out of 15.
The detailed report showed 2 of 9 tracked AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt (CCBot and Bytespider), with others such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot allowed. Whether to allow every crawler is a business decision; the point is to choose deliberately rather than by accident.
Speed: Google's Core Web Vitals treat a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less as good. Some guides claim AI bots skip pages above specific server-response thresholds (for example 800 ms); we found no primary-source confirmation, so treat those numbers as unverified.
Step 2: Fix structured data and trust signals
Here we lost the most points. Structured data scored 9 out of 25. The report found JSON-LD and Organization schema, but flagged SoftwareApplication, Product, FAQPage, review and BreadcrumbList schema as missing. Trust signals scored 11 out of 20, with testimonials and compliance badges flagged as gaps. SaaS content depth scored 4 out of 15.
Step 3: Measure answer readiness
The AEO analysis scored us 48 (F) with this verdict: AI engines can find the site but are unlikely to cite it confidently. It scores signals including entity authority, passage quality, entity resolution, stats, consensus signals, corroboration, information gain, freshness, brand frequency and citation probability.
Read the radar for relative weak spots, not as a precise measurement. Pages with few original statistics and little outside corroboration tend to give answer engines less to rely on, which is consistent with our low score.
Step 4: Check which buyer questions mention you
The citation checker takes your domain and generates 14 queries a buyer might ask, tagged by funnel stage (bottom-of-funnel, niche, middle-of-funnel and comparison). It then checks whether Gemini cites the brand, which competitors appear and which sources are used. It tests Gemini, so treat it as one sample, not a view across every AI platform.
AI answers change between runs, so repeat the check and look at trends.
Step 5: Turn each gap into a brief
For every uncovered question, build a brief before writing. The content brief generator takes a topic and audience and returns an H1, meta description, content goal and an H2/H3 structure. In a demo run for "ERP Support Services" aimed at CFOs, CEOs and CTOs, it produced a 1,500-word outline with sections on downtime costs, managed versus in-house support, and KPIs such as mean time to resolution.
Step 6: Check directories and re-measure
The SaaS Visibility Checker scored us 74 (C) and checks coverage across 20+ SaaS directories, since third-party listings can corroborate who you are. Then re-run every tool monthly after you ship fixes, and compare against your own baseline.
How to write pages AI systems can quote
- Answer first: a 40-70 word summary under the heading, then detail.
- Modular sections: one question per section. Guides often suggest 200-400 words; that is common advice, not a confirmed rule.
- Extractable formats: lists, definitions and clean HTML tables. Avoid hiding key content in tabs or scripts that crawlers may not render.
- Proof: original data, named authors with credentials, and cited sources.
- Entity clarity: describe who you are and what you do the same way on your About, services and author pages.
Step 7: Build mentions outside your own site
AI systems cross-check sources, so your own pages are only part of the picture. Adobe's guide describes how models weigh trust, entity clarity, structure and agreement across multiple sources. In practice that means:
- Directories and reviews: keep listings consistent and collect reviews that appear in crawlable HTML. Our SaaS Visibility Checker finds missing directory listings.
- Communities: contribute useful answers on forums such as Reddit and industry communities. Adobe's guide notes Reddit frequently appears in ChatGPT answers for recommendation-style questions.
- Digital PR and original research: publish data others cite, and pitch it to credible publications and podcasts.
- Consistent business details: for local or service businesses, keep name, address, phone and services identical across your site, Google Business Profile and social profiles.
What to measure
| Metric | Meaning | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Citation rate | How often AI answers link your pages as sources | Run a fixed prompt set; our citation checker gives one Gemini sample |
| Brand mentions | Times your brand is named, with or without a link | Manual prompt tests or a dedicated tracker |
| Share of voice | Your appearances versus competitors across category prompts | Same prompt set, tracked monthly |
| AI referral traffic | Visits from AI platforms | Analytics referral reports (GA4) |
| Business impact | Branded search, leads, pipeline | Search Console, CRM |
Our free tools give a snapshot, not continuous tracking. Use a 20 to 50 prompt set that reflects real buyer questions, as Adobe also recommends, and repeat it on a schedule.
Common mistakes
- Treating AI visibility as a side task owned by no one.
- Measuring mentions without checking crawler access, structure and authority, so you cannot tell why.
- Optimizing only the pages that rank, when AI systems may use deeper pages.
- Publishing generic AI-written content with no original data or expertise.
- Never connecting visibility to traffic, leads or revenue.
Third-party signal and limits
Our AI Visibility Audit tool has a 5.0 rating on Product Hunt, but it is based on only 3 reviews and 9 followers, so treat it as an early signal, not proof of accuracy. The tools use heuristic scoring, so a higher score does not guarantee citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google. No tool or agency can promise that.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if AI mentions my website?
Ask the questions your buyers ask in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google, or run a citation checker such as ours. Repeat monthly because answers vary.
Can I guarantee ChatGPT will cite my site?
No. Platforms are proprietary and change. You can remove blockers and improve evidence, but not guarantee outcomes.
Should I block AI crawlers?
That is a business choice. Blocking some crawlers can reduce your chance of appearing in those tools, so decide per crawler and review it regularly.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses on making content easy for answer systems to extract. GEO focuses on being mentioned and cited in generated answers. Sources use the terms differently, so ask which meaning a vendor uses.
How do I get my brand mentioned in AI search?
Make your site crawlable, publish clear answer-first content with original evidence, and earn consistent mentions on reviews, directories, communities and credible publications. Then test buyer prompts regularly.
Does page speed affect AI visibility?
Speed helps users and crawlers, and Google treats an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less as good. Claims about exact thresholds where AI bots skip pages are unverified.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
It varies with your site, competition and how fast you ship fixes. Adobe reports quick gains on its own site, but that is a single company's claim, so expect a range and measure monthly.
